Double success for Bärenreiter

Two publications awarded with Best Edition Prize

Bärenreiter has received the much sought-after German music prize “Best Edition” for two titles published in 2018. The awards were presented to Publishing Director Dr. Wendelin Göbel at the International Music Fair in Frankfurt on 3 April.

One prize has been awarded to the facsimile edition of the autograph of Hector Berlioz’ “Symphonie fantastique” (BVK 1601, € 720.00). The autograph score is a document of 292 pages in various formats. Each of the five movements has separate pagination and four of them have their own title page. The new and valuable facsimile edition in high-quality four-colour reproduction presents the manuscript as it is today – with glued-in strips of paper that can be folded out, just like Berlioz used them to make corrections.

The second prize goes to Bärenreiter’s Urtext edition of Czech composer Josef Suk’s (1874-1935) Symphony in C minor op. 27 “Asrael” (BA 9532). The editor Jonáš Hájek has carefully examined all available sources and offers orchestras and musicologists an up-to-date edition of the large-scale, late Romantic funeral symphony, which is named after the angel of death Asrael.
