Master of the Keys
François Couperin was born 350 years ago
François Couperin – “Le Grand” (the Great), as he was called – was born on 10 November 1668 and thus 350 years ago. Even in his day he was regarded as an extremely versatile composer who was able to write valuable contributions for many genres. The focal point of his Œuvre, however, is works for keyboard instruments. The four-volume “Pièces de clavecin” are among the most original ever written for harpsichord at that time and society could hardly wait for him to pen more works.
Bärenreiter is publishing the “Pièces de clavecin” in an urtext edition by Denis Herlin based on the current assessment of the sources. The first two of the four volumes have already appeared (BA 10844 and 10845). The “Premier livre” was awarded the German Music Edition Prize in 2017.
