Bärenreiter facsimile at Tenno‘s court

Angela Merkel presents the Japanese emperor with Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion”

During her visit to Japan, German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with the Japanese Emperor Akihito to whom she gave two musical gifts. In addition to a recording of the Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven she presented the Bärenreiter facsimile of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion” to the head of state of the world’s oldest monarchy. From May onwards, 85-year-old Tenno will have more time to appreciate his gifts as he will abdicate in April after 30 years in office.
