Telemann Edition to be continued
Since 1 January 2011 a new structure has been put into place for the Georg Philipp Telemann. Musical Works edition, which has been published by Bärenreiter since 1950. In recognition of this, an agreement was signed on 15 December 2010 during a ceremony in Magdeburg between the regional capital Magdeburg, the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the state of Saxony-Anhalt concerning the continuation of the Telemann edition of selected works. Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Hirschmann will be in overall charge, the editorial offices will continue to be in Magdeburg and the state will contribute a fixed sum each year. From 1992 to 2010 the edition was part of the Academies Programme co-ordinated by the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz. During this period the sustainable concept of an edition of selected was further developed, as a result of which new perspectives have opened up for a deeper understanding and further research into the music of several of the most prominent north and central German composers of the 18th century.
Since the 1992 edition was taken into Academies Programme, 26 volumes and the third volume of the Telemann Catalogue of Works of instrumental works have been published. The series now comprises 50 volumes and 3 supplementary volumes. The volumes represent important and exemplary compositions from as many of Telemann’s areas of activity as possible, including the complete few surviving operas, for which the publisher is also making available performance material. The forthcoming series of 12 volumes to be published by 2020 continues the edition of church music conceived by Telemann in yearly cycles, beginning with self-contained groups of twelve cantatas. This will reinforce this important aspect of his overall output, both in quantitative and qualitative terms.
