Lalo’s opera “Fiesque” in the series “L’Opéra français”
The second volume in the series L’Opéra français has been published – the score of the opera Fiesque by Édouard Lalo (BA 8703). The French composer’s grand opéra had to wait 140 years for its staged premiere, which was given in 2007 at the Nationaltheater Mannheim. Lalo had written the work in 1867 for a composition competition, but was unsuccessful. The three-act work, based on Friedrich Schiller’s drama Die Verschwörung des Fiesco zu Genua, falls between a number opera and a through-composed work and is, as the Mannheim production demonstrated, extremely effective on the stage.
With the publication of Bärenreiter’s L’Opéra français series, the rich treasure trove of French opera from the 19th and early 20th centuries is unlocked and made available to opera houses in reliable music editions.
