Heinrich Schütz’s “Geistliche Chor-Music” in an up-to-date scholarly edition
Bärenreiter-Verlag is continuing its long tradition of publishing the baroque composer Heinrich Schütz’s works with a new edition of the twelve five-part motets SWV 369-380 from his Geistliche Chor-Music. The edition (BA 5901) is based on the corresponding volume 5 of the “New Schütz Edition”, edited by Werner Breig in 2003. As the well-known early music Manfred Cordes explains in the foreword to the practical edition, performing the motets a cappella, that is without instrumental accompaniment, no longer reflects current knowledge about performance practice during Schütz’s time. Consequently, in addition to the full score, individual parts for instruments with the text of the vocal parts underlaid are also available.
The new edition has been used for the first time in a concert on 20 March 2012 in Kassel. The performers were the chorus “Cantiamo piccolo” of the University of Kassel, accompanied by instrumentalists on period instruments, conducted by Andreas Cessak.
