Claude Palisca Award for Rossini Edition
The critical edition of Gioachino Rossini’s Petite Messe solennelle (Bärenreiter-Verlag) by Patricia B. Brauner and Philip Gossett is Winner of the Claude Palisca Award of the American Musicological Society, 2010. Thanks in part to a newly discovered presentation copy and an elegant hypothesis regarding its relationship to autograph manuscripts so complex that the editors describe them as “miniature battlefields” of continuous revision, this edition according to the jury utterly supersedes two significant modern editions by other scholars. In addition to sorting out the multiple versions and complex history of the work, the edition presents the variants in a way that encourages choices for performers. From the tiniest notational details of the score to the probing, erudite, and eminently readable introductory essay, this edition is exemplary in every way.
The Claude V. Palisca Award honors each year a scholarly edition or translation in the field of musicology published during the previous year.
