This mass which can be sung by female voices (SSA) or mixed choir (SSATB) and can be accompanied by either string quartet or string orchestra has been one of Jansson's most successful compositions to date, having already received premieres in four countries since its composition in 2015.
It was commissioned and given its world premiere for female voices and string quartet by the Skowronki Girls Choir conducted by Alicja Szeluga in Poznan (Poland) on 25 April 2015. This was followed by a performance of the "Gloria" later that year in December, as part of the choir's concert tour to the USA, whose highlight was a concert at Carnegie Hall, New York (USA).
The German premiere which was also the first performance with string orchestra took place on 15 May 2016. The Missa was performed during the Pentecost Mass at Cologne Cathedral by the 100-strong “Girls’ Choir at the Cologne Cathedral” conducted by Oliver Sperling. This choir performed it once more, one week later as part of the Festival Musica Sacra Nova in Brauweiler Abbey, Pulheim (Germany).
During the same month, on 21 May 2016, the "Missa Popularis" received its UK and mixed choir premiere in London sung by the award-winning choir Chantage under the direction of James Davey in celebration of the Patronal Festival for St Dunstan-in-the-West.
Finally the work was given its Swedish premiere by the Linköpings Damkör conducted by the Director Musices Emeritus Hans Lundgren in Brunneby church on 4 June 2016 and another performance took place on the following day in the church in Skeda.
The composer was fortunate to be able to attend all these performances bar the concert at Brauweiler Abbey and to experience some very different interpretations of his work.
