“Moonlight”, “Pathétique”, “Hammerklavier”, “Appassionata”: some of Beethoven’s piano sonatas have become widely known by their nicknames. But even the unnamed ones form an inexhaustible treasure-trove of masterpieces.
Beethoven’s “Diabelli Variations” mark the pinnacle of his oeuvre for variations and next to Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” form one of the most important contributions to this genre.
