The Bärenreiter edition of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, edited by renowned musicologist Jonathan Del Mar, is the basis for a new app for iPhone and iPad, published by Deutsche Grammophon and Amphio Ltd., and now available in the App Store in a German, English and Japanese version.

Four legendary recordings from the catalogue of Deutsche Grammophon can be called up on the app:

  •     Berliner Philharmoniker, Ferenc Fricsay (1958)
  •     Berliner Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan (1963)
  •     Wiener Philharmoniker, Leonard Bernstein (1979), auch als Video
  •     Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, John Eliot Gardiner (1992)

All recordings have been synchronized with each other, which enables the user to compare them at any one point in the work.

There are various versions of the score available. These include the complete orchestral score edited by Jonathan Del Mar published by Bärenreiter as well as a simplified version that highlights six key parts in which individual instruments can be recognized intuitively. Alternatively, the individual instrumental groups are highlighted in colour as the music progresses creating an almost hypnotic effect that enables one to experience the music visually. Experts will also be impressed by an 1825 copy of the manuscript made available by the British Library.

In addition, there are informative accompanying texts and interviews with conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, John Eliot Gardiner and Gustavo Dudamel, with well-known musicians such as Albrecht Mayer and Alice Sara Ott and others. These profound insights can be listened to alongside the performance of the work.
