Opera in the 19th century

The rich and diverse music of the 19th century is well represented in our catalogue, and opera is no exception. It begins at the end of the classical period (Ludwig van Beethoven's only opera, “Fidelio”, and Franz Schubert's Fierabras”), and extends into the 20th century with operas by Leoš Janáček (“Osud”, “The Makropoulos Affair”). A special focus is given to the French repertoire, largely based on our complete editions or editions of selected works (e. g. “New Berlioz Edition” and “Works of Gioachino Rossini”). The recently launched series “L'Opéra français” gathers together important French-language operas, including masterpieces by Charles Gounod (Faust”), Jules Massenet (“Werther”) and Camille Saint-Saëns (“Samson et Dalila”). Our new editions of Vincenzo Bellini's “Norma” and Pietro Mascagni's “Cavalleria rusticana” are currently opening up fresh territory.
