Gerhard Wimberger

About Gerhard Wimberger

“Wimberger’s ouput is dominated by music-dramatic works and compositions for larger forces; by comparison, traditional chamber music forms have only recently found a place in his oeuvre. The juxtaposition of tragic and comic, of familiar sounding and advanced tonal language, the commitment to a wide variety of stylistic possibilities and an associated openness and tolerance towards everything which constitutes the phenomenon of music in its complexity: these approaches to composition find expression in Wimberger’s work in a particular way. There are affinities here and there with the realm of light music and jazz, as well as a critical attitude to any kind of aesthetic dogmatism, and, particularly in his more recent works, an intensive examination of philosophical and ideological matter.”
