The Editor
Jonathan Del Mar was born in 1951 in London. He was awarded a music scholarship to Christ Church,
Oxford, and continued his studies at the Royal College of Music, London. Apart from being a
musicologist of international acclaim, Jonathan Del Mar has a busy conducting schedule.
From an early age, Beethoven's work played a decisive role in Jonathan Del Mar's musical development.
By the age of thirty, he had already conducted all of the Beethoven symphonies from memory and Beethoven
became the focal point of his musicological studies.
In 1985 Jonathan Del Mar began to research intensively the existing sources of the major Beethoven works.
The results of this research have been performed and recorded by orchestras such as the Hanover Band
and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique. Sir Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Symphony
Orchestra performances of Del Mar's Beethoven symphony editions in 1995 were hailed as a success in
Frankfurt and London. Jonathan Del Mar's New Urtext Edition of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony has already
been performed in 1996 in Germany, Austria and Japan by Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
