Solo Concertos

8 Concertos for Harpsichord

(Ed. W. Breig)

In November 1999 Bärenreiter launched its complete edition of Bach’s concertos for solo harpsichord and orchestra. All eight concertos are presented in piano reductions with separate orchestra parts. Not only is the piano reduction suitable for conducting from the harpsichord, it also enables the works to be played on two harpsichords.

All of Bach’s solo harpsichord concertos are now available for performances with the »Urtext« of the New Bach Edition.

Viola

(W. Fischer) / 19'
BA 5149
BA 5149a Piano Reduction (M. Töpel)

This Concerto in E-flat major for Viola, Strings and Basso Continuo is really something new.

It has been possible to reconstruct this lost work because fortunately it had been preserved in the form of arrangements by Bach himself. With these arrangements we refer to the Harpsichord Concerto in E-flat major (BWV 1053) and three cantata movements with obligato organ. The latter include the first movement (Sinfonia) and the second movement (Aria) » Stirb in mir, Welt« from the cantata » Gott soll allein mein Herze haben« (BWV 169) and the third movement (Sinfonia) from the cantata »Ich geh und suche mit Verlangen« (BWV 49).

In the past there were attempts to reconstruct several works by Bach. However they were based on the content of the Old Bach Edition which required significant revision. This reconstruction by Wilfried Fischer is based on a scholarly method which orientates itself on the handwritten sources of arrangements which Bach made himself for harpsichord (or respectively for organ). All autographs of these arrangements have been preserved and clearly conclude that the original on which these are based is the Viola Concerto.

Virtually all of Bach's harpsichord concertos are arrangements he made of his own violin and oboe concertos, of which some have survived and others are lost. One of the lost originals is the Concerto in C minor for oboe, violin, strings and basso continuo, which has survived only in Bach's arrangement for two harpsichords (BWV 1060). Wilfried Fischer's volume of reconstructions of lost solo concertos for the New Bach Edition (volume VII/7) draws on a special method of reconstruction developed from Bach's own technique of arrangement. This method has enabled Fischer to produce versions of the solo concertos as close as possible to the original.
